With these balsa "mess sightings", I had never caught Mika in the act until today. So I quickly jumped up from the bed and took a picture. Very blurry but it's the best I could do because as soon as he saw me come to the cage he jumped to me and wouldn't leave me alone. I tried placing him back at the toy but he was just too excited to come out. This time around, he chewed a nice half-inch sliver out of the blue balsa block. Good boy!!
What a mess (LOL)!! Who is going to clean that up?! |
See the chew marks in the balsa? :D |
Sorry for the blurry pic - I had to snap a pic quick! |
I want to continue encouraging him to chew balsa so, even though I have a TON of other toys for him, I'm going to get him smaller toys that are primarily all balsa soon. Things for Wings has come out with some adorable toys for the "littles" and they will soon be mine - er - I mean Mika's! ;) It's not like his bigger toys will go to waste... I'm sure Raptor will have no problem destroying them.
Hehe, I agree. What a mess ;)
ReplyDeleteAt first I was expecting something really bad until I saw the pics. But that's good that he is shredding a little.
Yeah, I thought it was funny though because that IS a mess when you compare it to how he never used to shred! Hehe. And now, that blue balsa block is about 1/10 destroyed!! I came home today and had this look (O_O) on my face.
DeletePretty soon you will need to invest in a professional shop vac, because the regular vac won't be able to clean up all that mess ;)
ReplyDeleteFunny you should say that because I came home today and that blue balsa block is almost HALF destroyed!! This is truly a milestone for Mika!! I found more blue shredded bits on his platform perches, on the newspaper floor AND on the carpet this time!
DeleteI've always read that the best bird toys that you provide for your birds should consist of wood that will give them a challenge according to their size. My Macaws go through their pine toys like butter, so I try to make or buy toys which are made from a harder wood.
ReplyDeleteMika had never been interested in wood prior to this, regarded of what I gave him. He was just never big on toys period because he preferred to be with me. It came as a shock when he actually started chewing the balsa after all this time. :) Now that he's gone, I will be keeping the two toys he dented.
DeleteWith our Meyer's, we give a variety of wood as he bores easily with wood he can't easily chip. He seems to hate challenges so we have to challenge him in tiny increments as not to lose his interest.
